Building a nursery rhyme curriculum for your homeschool doesn’t need to be complicated. The classics have been teaching language, counting, rhythm, and social concepts for centuries — the structure is already built in. Your job is to make it consistent and intentional.
This is a complete 13-week semester plan, one rhyme per week, for ages 2–6.
Why Nursery Rhymes as a Curriculum Core?

The 13-Week Semester Plan
Week 1: Twinkle Twinkle Little Star
Core skill: Rhyme recognition, astronomy vocabulary Daily activities:
- Monday: Watch the video, sing together 2×
- Tuesday: Rhyming word match activity
- Wednesday: Draw your night sky (stars, moon, planets)
- Thursday: Sing with actions — fingers sparkle, arms reach up
- Friday: Introduce new vocabulary: “diamond,” “wonder,” “blazing”
Extension: Look at real stars together at night. Count them.
Week 2: Old MacDonald Had a Farm
Core skill: Animal vocabulary, phonics (initial sounds E-I-E-I-O) Daily activities:
- Monday: Watch + sing, identify each animal
- Tuesday: Animal sound matching game
- Wednesday: Draw the farm and all its animals
- Thursday: What sound does each animal make? Charades version.
- Friday: Add a NEW animal to the song (the cow, the duck — what else?)
Extension: Visit a farm, watch a farm documentary, or read a farm book.
Week 3: Wheels on the Bus
Core skill: Transportation vocabulary, action words, sequencing Daily activities:
- Monday: Sing with full actions (wheels go round, wipers go swish)
- Tuesday: Draw the bus, label parts
- Wednesday: Sequence the verses in order — what comes first?
- Thursday: Create your own verse (what else is on the bus?)
- Friday: Action word vocabulary focus: round, swish, squeak, shush
Weeks 4–13
The same daily structure applies across:
- Week 4: Itsy Bitsy Spider (resilience, weather vocabulary)
- Week 5: Baa Baa Black Sheep (counting, colors, community)
- Week 6: Jack and Jill (safety, cause and effect, story sequence)
- Week 7: Humpty Dumpty (gravity, empathy, problem-solving)
- Week 8: Row Row Row Your Boat (nature, rhyme, actions)
- Week 9: Mary Had a Little Lamb (pets, rules, community)
- Week 10: Head Shoulders Knees and Toes (body vocabulary, movement)
- Week 11: Five Little Ducks (counting backward, family)
- Week 12: London Bridge is Falling Down (history, engineering concepts)
- Week 13: Rock-a-Bye Baby (sleep, emotions, wind + nature)
Assessment (That Doesn’t Feel Like Testing)
For early childhood, assessment means observation. After each week, note:
- Can they fill in the rhyme word when you pause before it?
- Do they use vocabulary from the rhyme in conversation?
- Can they retell the basic story of the rhyme?
- Do they ask questions about the rhyme’s content?

How to Fit This into a Homeschool Day
A nursery rhyme session runs 15–25 minutes. For ages 2–3, 15 minutes is usually the sweet spot. For ages 4–6, you can extend to 25 minutes with the drawing and vocabulary activities.
Recommended slot: Morning circle time, before structured learning. The musical energy of a nursery rhyme session activates language and attention in a way that makes subsequent activities more productive.
If your child asks to repeat the song, let them. Repetition is how the learning locks in.
